Hardcover. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Frontis Only (illustrator). 1st Thus. Confucius (551BC to 479BC) remains highly regarded and often quoted from his thoughts and wisdom, made so long ago. In her introductory notes on his Analects Lady Dorothea Hosie states that "to listen to this great scholar and gentleman discorse on life and social responsibility, on Sincerity and Virtue" anyone would be greatly impressed "by the grandure of such a master." Lady Hosie was the daughter of Professor William Edward Soothill, who translated "The Analects" in 1910. His translation was influenced by his desire to present "a more modern interpretation" of the classic. Lady Hosie's notes to this edition of 1937 say that the Analects were first translated to Latin for "non-Chinese readers" in 1687 with the first English translation published in 1861 by Dr Leege, in his translation of "the whole of the Chinese Classics." Professor Soothill's 1910 edition was published by OUP with this new edition printed also by OUP in 1937, two years after his death, as one of the publisher's "The World's Classics" series. The introductory notes run for more that 40 pages and include a detailed biography of Confucius, the history of the Analects, their discovery and explains that they were probably compiled after his death by two senior desciples (of whivh he had 36), and were from his discourses with them and inquirers. Other preliminary sections of the book briefly describe the content of the 10 original books containing the Analects, a chronology, notes on his 36 desciples, a Dramatis Personae of major figures in Confucius' life. The actual Analects occupy 223, pages (excluding the 50+ preliminary pages) and are followed by approx 30 pages of notes and index, plus another 16 pages containuing the listing of the titles comprising "The World's Classics" series. This 1937 copy is from the first printing of "The Analects" in that series. It is a small book with VG+ blue hard covers with impressed borders to both boards and an impressed decoration centre front, gilt spine titles. The only illustration is a mono frontis image of a Confucius statue at a temple in his birth-place. Apart from an ink name top edge FFEP and a few discreet pencil underlinings the text block is excellent. The original place-marker ribbon is still attached. Seller Inventory # 005234
