Henry Thomas Alken was an English painted and engraver chiefly known as a caricaturist and illustrator of sporting subjects and coaching scenes. Robert Smith Surtees was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer. He is best known for Jorrocks' Jaunts and Jolities and Mr Sponge's Sporting tour, and his other comedic novels.
