Croze-Magnan, and then into English.Illustrated with nineteen engraved plates of heads traced from Raphael's work, and reproduced in the same size by J. Gaubaud. Each plate is marked 'proof', and retains the original tissue guard. Collated, complete.In this work, 'the remarks and observations of Vasari, Mengs, Reynolds, Fuseli, and other distinguished writers and artists who have noticed this celebrated picture' are included, providing a comprehensive overview of critical responses to the work.A celebration of the final painting by the Italian High Renaissance master Raphael, depicting the transfiguration of Jesus. Raphael worked on it for a number of years preceding his 1520 death. In the original quarter morocco binding, with cloth covered boards. Boards detached. Rubbing to board perimeters. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned, with the odd spot. Light tide mark to the head of each plate. Fair.
