Robert Burton (1577-1640) was an English scholar much admired in Early Modern England for his prose style. Written under the name of Democritus Junior, Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy offers an encyclopedic discussion of melancholy, as mental diseases, including bi-polar disorder and depression, were known in the 17th century. The work first appeared in 1621, with five subsequent editions during Burton's lifetime. The edition here for sale is based on the Sixth Edition.** With illustrations by E. McKnight Kauffer, based on those in the 17th century editions, but modernized in an Art Deco style.** A Nonesuch Press edition, with typography by Francis Meynell. Printed by the Westminster Press.
