- An Ethnological History of Early Britain
- Originally published in 1884, Ancient and Modern Britons is the magnum opus of Scottish folklorist and antiquarian David MacRitchie. Drawing upon a vast array of linguistic evidence, historical manuscripts, and Celtic folklore, MacRitchie presents a highly original and extensively researched argument regarding the original inhabitants of the British Isles.
- MacRitchie challenges standard historical narratives by arguing that the early tribes of Britain-including the Picts and the indigenous groups often mythologized as "fairies" or "brownies" in local folklore-were in fact distinct, dark-skinned races. In Volume 1, he lays the foundational evidence for this fascinating ethnological theory, tracing the presence of these groups through Roman accounts, Gypsy migrations, and ancient British lineages.
- Inside this fascinating anthropological text, readers will explore:
- Historical Ethnology: MacRitchie's extensive research into the diverse and early tribes of Scotland, Ireland, and England.
- Celtic Folklore: How ancient myths and legends preserve the cultural memory of Britain's earliest indigenous inhabitants.
- The Origins of the Picts: Alternative historical perspectives on the ancient peoples of the British Isles.
- A vital and deeply researched text for historians, folklorists, and anyone interested in the complex, diverse, and ancient history of Great Britain.
