Andrew Dickson White (November 7, 1832 November 4, 1918) was an American historian and educator who co-founded Cornell University and served as its first president for nearly two decades. He was known for expanding the scope of college curricula. He had also served as New York senator and was later appointed as U.S. Ambassador to Germany and Russia. 2 pp, 5 x 8, ALS, ON Legation of the United States, St. Petersburg, stationary, March 19, 1894 as U.S. Minister to Russia, to the U.S. Consul at Christiana, as a letter of recommendation. In small part, "Allow me to introduce & comment to your kindness, Francis C. Pratt, Esquire, of Hartford, Connecticut who takes your beautiful city on his way westward. "Mr. Pratt is connected with the eminent firm of Pratt, Whitney & Co., which as you are doubtless aware, has very large connections in all parts of our country.
