Chapter One

To Emily, who has her very own angel looking over her.

My name is Emily, and I am three years old. I like to go to school and play with my friends. Playing outside is my favorite thing to do.

My mommy's name is Christine. She has beautiful blonde hair and hazel eyes. My mommy loves me very much. In the daytime we can play together.

At night we can snuggle together in my new big-girl bed.

I love to play with my mommy's long blonde hair; it is so soft. Sometimes when we snuggle, I fall asleep with Mommy's hair in my hand. I love my mommy.

My daddy's name is Scott. Daddy has dark brown hair and brown eyes. Everyone tells me I look like my mommy because I have blonde hair and hazel eyes.

I have two grandmas and two grandpas. Grandma Barbara kisses me all the time and tells me I look just like Mommy when she was a little girl. Grandma Paula also kisses me a lot. She tells me I look like my mommy, but she says I have Daddy's nose and appetite!

Sometimes Daddy and Mommy take me to visit a nearby farm. I love to see all the animals. I love horses, and I love to ride them.

My two Grandmas are the best. They said I could take riding lessons if it was okay with my mommy and daddy. Every week, I go to the horse stables. Miss Diane, my teacher, says I'm doing very well and that I will be able to ride in the show at the end of this year.

I have a lot of cousins. It's fun to have cousins. They come over to my house, and I go visit them at their house. We play all kinds of games together. We play a game called monster. That's when we pick a big person to chase us around, and we scream, run, and hide! The "monster" has to find us. We scream some more. That's a fun game.

One day I noticed that my mommy wasn't home. I started to miss her. I asked Daddy, "Where is Mommy?" Daddy said that Mommy was not feeling well and that she went away to get better.

A week went by and I asked again, "Where is Mommy?" This time Daddy looked very sad. He hugged me and told me he missed Mommy too. Daddy and I snuggled. I love my Daddy.

Then one day Daddy got a phone call. His eyes looked very sad. Daddy hugged me and said to me, "Mommy is an angel now."

"What's an angel?" I asked. "When will Mommy come home?" Daddy explained that an angel is someone who lives up in heaven.

I don't want my mommy to be an angel! Daddy said he didn't want it either, but sometimes we do not get to choose who becomes an angel. Daddy looked very sad. I gave him a hug. "How can I see my Mommy again? How can I play with her hair? Who can I snuggle with? I miss my Mommy!"

Daddy said, "Angels help people." I asked him if Mommy would help me when she came home. Daddy said that Mommy would not be coming home. Becoming an angel means you have to live up in heaven, which seems very far away to me.

Daddy told me we could miss her together. He told me I could snuggle with him every day. Daddy said that if I play with my hair when I go to bed, it's almost like playing with Mommy's hair, because it's the same color and everything.

Daddy gave me a little angel. She is beautiful; she has blonde hair and hazel eyes. She has a white dress and beautiful angel wings. Daddy told me to keep my angel in my pocket.

My angel will help me whenever I need help. Daddy also said that if I felt sad, I should come to him for a snuggle and a big kiss. He told me he'd have to give me two snuggles and two kisses-one from Mommy and one from him.

Today I asked my angel to help me. You see, I keep playing with my hair, and now it's all full of knots.

My angel comes with me wherever I go. That's why I keep my hands in my pocket.

There's an angel in there!
