8vo., 22.5cm, Second Edition, xxxi,217p., engraved frontis view & title page vignette, 11 wood-engraved plates (1 folding) & 6 engraved plates (fish), many wood-cut illustrations in the text, in contemporary half dark calf, gilt ruled raised bands, full gilt decorations and borders in the panels, gilt titles, marbled boards and endpapers, t.e.g., worn on the edges, some peeling, expertly re-stained, a few ink notations in the text, bookplate, very good sound copy (gar). ~ Salter, Thomas Frederick (b. 1762/3, d. in or after 1820), writer on angling, carried on business as a hatter at 47 Charing Cross, London. He began angling as a child, accompanying his father on fishing expeditions, and until the age of fifty-two (1815) he used to fish wherever possible in the vicinity of London, remaining at favourite stations for weeks together. When, owing to declining health, he retired from business, he lived for a long time at Clapton Place, Hackney, and put into writing his observations on angling. He called himself gent.' in the title of his first book, The angler's guide, or, Complete London angler in the Thames, Lea, and other waters twenty miles round London, which was published in 1814. A popular, practical book, it went to nine editions, as did an abridged version, first issued in 1816. (ODNB).
