Prior to this he was Professor of Classics at Louisiana State University and a high school Latin teacher. For years his research has focused on animals and animal lore of antiquity and from the Middle Ages, especially the works of Albertus Magnus. His other main area of interest is in Latin and Greek pedagogy and its history.
