Published in 1908 to astounding success, Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery has since become a classic. Set in the nineteenth century, the book tells of the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan, who has bright red hair and a vivid imagination. She is adopted by the Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, a brother and sister who need help on their farm. They were in fact looking to adopt a boy but, after Matthew’s kind encouragement, they allow Anne to stay with them and she has many ups and downs settling in to Green Gables, her first real home.

Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in 1874 in Prince Edward Island. Her mother died when she was just under two years old and so she was left in the care of her maternal grandparents, who brought her up. She published her first novel Anne of Green Gables in 1908 which was an immediate success. And so Montgomery's successful career took off. She went on to write 20 more novels and 530 short stories, many of which were inspired by her rural home. Her published work, as well as her letters and diaries, have been read and loved all over the world.
