David Tickner has been working with words, learners, and teachers for more than fifty years. He has an MA in Education with a focus on post-secondary teaching and learning, and his career in post-secondary education has included teaching adult learners, training instructors, and facilitating faculty development programs. For 35 years, he was part of Vancouver Community College's School of Instructor Education, where he helped shape and teach the BC Provincial Instructor Diploma Program. He has also been closely involved in the development and growth of the Instructional Skills Workshop, which is delivered in countries around the world.

Even as a child, Tickner remembers being enthralled with how words came to be. This led him to start incorporating etymology in the classroom, creating a Wordshop blog (http: //www.davidtickner.ca/blog), and writing his first book, May I Have a Word With You? When not delving into the origins of words, writing, or working as a faculty development consultant, Tickner enjoys hiking, cycling, painting, drawing, and serving as the president of the Fraser Valley Artists Society. He lives in Abbotsford, BC, with his wife, Raymonde.
