Korallenfelsen im gewohnlichen Gebrauche war, aber Strachan (1702) scheint der erste gewesen zu sein, der aussprach, daß die Korallentiere größere Felsenmassen zu bilden vermögen. In der Mitte der zweiten Periode begann man auch, über die Bedeutung der Korallen für den Aufbau vieler tropischen Inseln näher zu spekulieren. So läßt der Teilnehmer der zweiten Cook schen Expedition, R. Forster die Korallentiere ringförrnige, senkrecht vom Meeresboden aufsteigende, fast bis zur Oberfläche reichende Mauern bilden, die durch Anhäufungen von Sand, Muscheln, Tang und Korallentrümmern, welche durch die Brandung und Hochfiuten vom äußeren Rande hineingeworfen werden, schließlich aus dem Wasser emporsteigen. Forsters Ansicht wurde von Flinders der die Korallengebäude aus 200' Tiefe aufsteigen läßt, bestätigt, während v. Chamisso die Meinung aussprach, daß die Korallentiere ihre Skelette auf Meeresuntiefen oder an den Gipfeln unterseeischer Ge birge absondern. Péron (1807) sucht die Korallennatur an mehr als 200 Inseln zu zeigen. Quoy und Gaimard (1825) dagegen glaubten, daß man die Bedeutung der Korallen auf die Inselbildung der Trepen überschätzt habe. Sie verfochten die Ansicht, daß die Korallenbildungen keineswegs aus der Tiefe emporstiegen, sondern nur zu einer geringen Mächtigkeit auf unterseeischen Felsen wuchsen. Die Ringform der Bauten wird nur durch die Bildung des Bodens bedingt. H empri0h und Ehren berg (1834) untersuchten die Korallenbänke des Roten Meeres, unter denen sich jedoch keine wirklichen Atolle fanden. In ihrer Arbeit findet man auch eine Übersicht der älteren Literatur der Koralleninseln.
