There has been an increasing emphasis on excellence in education and realization of the importance of foreign language learning in academic circles at the high school and college lever. A solid grounding in a foreign language provides a student with many valuable skills; the ability to communicate with people who would have remained inaccessible otherwise, understanding of a whole body of printed material, perception of different ways of ordering reality and interpreting experience. The mirage of a monolingual world has faded and the advantages of foreign language education have become more and more apparent. Even where one's native language is concerned, foreign language learning has much to offer' a clearer understanding of the structure of the native language and, therefore, greater ability to use language effectively.
