The Apocrypha: The Lutheran Edition With Notes: English Standard Version

Read the Apocrypha through a Lutheran lens--historical writings, wisdom, prayers, and songs that illuminate Second Temple Judaism and enrich your study of the Old and New Testaments.

The Apocrypha stood in the Luther Bible for centuries: books not held equal to Holy Scripture, yet still useful and good to read. Here, you'll encounter Judith's courage, Tobit's faithfulness, the wisdom of Sirach, the history of the Maccabean revolt, and prayers shaped by repentance and hope.

Features include:

Grounded in the Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions, this study edition helps readers distinguish the canonical Word of God from these valuable ancient writings while appreciating their place in the life of Israel and the early Church. Clear introductions, Lutheran notes, cross-references, and excerpts from Martin Luther and Johann Gerhard guide careful reading.

Maps, timelines, charts, engravings, and essays bring the intertestamental period into view--from Persian rule through the Roman era. Explore the Dead Sea Scrolls, Jewish worship and feasts, early Christian use of these texts, and the historical world into which Jesus was born.
