Presented by Charles Hoag (1808-1888) a New England classical scholar, the first schoolmaster of the city of Minneapolis, and second Treasurer of Hennepin County. He is also known to have played a part in naming Minneapolis. After starting farming, he served as President of the Agricultural and Horticultural Societies of Minnesota. Robert Barclay was one of the most famous exponents of the Society of Friends. Barclay wrote in a time when Friends were facing serious persecution, execution and potential destruction. Robert Barclay made Quaker thinking logically defensible when the movement was only about a quarter of a century old. Some think he saved it from extinction The Apology remains a classic statement of Quaker principles.
