This periodical sought to interest the working class with writings of those of a similar class and economic situation. It is a Christian periodical, including Bible verses.Containing essays, plays, verses, sketches and anecdotes.With quotes from the likes of Sir Walter Raleigh and Samuel Coleridge Taylor.With anonymous writers such as 'A Poor Mechanic', 'A Manchester Warehouse Boy', 'An Old Man'. Other contributors include James Rmith, J. P. Mursell, and J. Cope.Undated; dated from the first page, stating 'We advertised accordingly in the Christian Times newspaper and another journal, that we should be happy to insert the communications of working people in our January number for 1849.'A scarce collection of four volumes of this working class periodical, in its contemporary binding. In a half calf binding. Externally a trifle worn, with the paper covered boards a little tattered and the extremities of the leather slightly bumped. Gift inscription dated 1851to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with the occasional mark. Good.
