An Appendix to the Six Chapters of Modern Observations on Antient History. on Political Friendship

An Appendix To The Six Chapters Of Modern Observations On Antient History. On Political Friendshipis an 18th-century antiquarian examination of the nature of private vs political friendship in ancient Athens, presented as an appendix to a larger work. The text analyzes how personal loyalties and self-interest influence public life, including the interplay of factions such as the Leaguers and their opponents, and the governance under Macedonian influence. Through biographical sketches of figures such as Thrasyretus, Apollotes, Phocion, Demades, Nicias, and others, it traces the power struggles in the Prytaneum, the manipulation of finances, and the shifting coalitions that shaped political decision-making. The writing explores the fragile balance between virtue and expediency in republican government and the ways in which private interests can both sustain and undermine liberty. Printed in the Year 1758.
