About this Item

Pp. 7250, 20 plates and maps (8 are folding, 3 are in color), 120 text-figures. Publisher's one-half red morocco, spine lettered in gilt, over marbled boards, top page edge in gilt, 8vo. This is the Appleton edition of Darwin's collected works specially bound in uniform half red morocco leather - this set was edited by Darwin's son, Francis, and published as a tribute to Charles Darwin who had died in 1882. By the 1890s, public interest in Darwin's theory of evolution and natural selection had increased so dramatically that Appleton decided to issue this specially bound set of Darwin's works. The set includes these 12 titles in 15 volumes (three titles were issued in two volume sets): Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology of the countries visited during the Voyage of the Beagle (Freeman 82); Geological Observations on the Volcanic Islands and Parts of South America during the voyage of the Beagle (Freeman 287); The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs (Freeman 286); On the Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection, in 2 volumes (Freeman 448); The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication, in 2 volumes (Freeman 895); The Descent Man and Selection in Relation to Sex (Freeman 979); The Expressions of Emotions in Man and Animals (Freeman 1151); Insectivorous Plants (Freeman 1228); The Different Forms of Flowers on Plants of the same species (Freeman 1288); The Power of Movement in Plants (Freeman 1333); The Formation of Vegetable Mould through the Action of Worms (Freeman 1380); Life and Letters of Charles Darwin including an autobiographical chapter, in 2 volumes (Freeman 1465). All of these titles were published during Darwin's lifetime with the exception of 'Life and Letters' (1887). Edited by Francis Darwin, this set includes reproduction of many letters exchanged between Darwin and such great naturalists as Robert FitzRoy, Thomas Huxley, Alfred Russel Wallace, Joseph Hooker, and Asa Gray. No ownership marks. Some light edge wear to morocco bindings, no signs of use (some pages unopened); a bright and clean set in near fine condition. Bookseller Inventory # 5734
