John Simms was born near Derby but has spent most of his life in Somerset. Coming from railway and mining families he has had a lifelong interest in railways and has worked as a volunteer for the Somerset and Dorset Railway Trust and the Carris Railway. Between 1994 and 2016 he was a member of staff at the West Somerset Railway, spending much of his time promoting the WSR, Other parts of his life included being part of Aunt Fortescue's Bluesrockers, and CAMRA. He has written newspaper columns, booklets and articles but this is his first book.
