The Archetype of Pilgrimage: Outer Action With Inner Meaning (Jung and Spirituality Series)

The Archetype of Pilgrimage is a fascinating journey toward a better understanding of the meaning and variety of pilgrimages from the insights of Carl Jung. From Mecca to Graceland, from Japan to Costa Rica, from Custer to Lech Walesa, the Clifts take readers across the globe, across cultures and religions, and present this lively and informative work that is both a broad and a beguiling subject. They draw from their experiences as teachers of the pilgrimage as well as from their experiences as interviewers and visitors of pilgrimage sites. Their topics include: the longing for a pilgrimage, religious and secular expressions of the archetype of pilgrimage, the misuse of pilgrimage, common motifs in dreams, secular and patriotic pilgrimages, and the quest for meaning. Each chapter is preceded with a vignette that conveys some of the flavor and richness of individual pilgrimages.
