About this Item

Vol. 1 (of 4) Folio (45.5 x 29.0 cm). Contemporary quarter calf with marble boards. Collation: [iii] iv-ix [3], [1] 2-298 [2] pp. + 152 engraved plates. This first volume of the series written by Blondel contains: Introduction á l'architecture, un abrégé histoire de la ville de Paris & la description des principaux edifices du Faubourg St. Germain. These two books are followed by 152 engrav- ed plates. The binding has wear to ends of spine with minor repair to break in leather. Boards have wear to corners and edges. Internal condition is very good with marble end papers, an alternate title page dated 1738 and clean text which includes engravings. The plates are generally very good with verso browning to first plate and browning to about 10 plates at end of book. Blondel was a noted French architect who was a well known teacher who professed a more open view to architecture even though he personally was quite con-servative. He started his own school to which almost all students of architecture attended. The plates in this work illustrate the fine details of Blondel's work. He was also a fine engraver and served as architect to King Louis XV. Bookseller Inventory # 000083
