About this title

Synopsis:

Subtitled `a social history', this book with its feast of fine pictures is about largesse (and the distribution of surplus wealth), the growing demand for personal privacy and improvements in domestic comfort. `Life styles are my subject', writes Colin Platt, `and buildings are my documents the most sensitive and reliable of social indicators'.

From Library Journal:

Like much of Platt's work, this is written from the viewpoint of the historian and archaeologist. It contains no floor plans and is not as architecturally descriptive as, for example, Hugh Braun's Introduction to English Mediaeval Architecture (1955), now out of print. Instead, the author has deliberately left most of the description to Kersting's excellent photographs, which are abundant and captioned with informative notes. The period covered starts with the Norman invasion and continues through the Elizabethan age, with equal attention paid to events and buildings--the latter mainly churches and castles. A short glossary includes ecclesiastical as well as architectural terms. For public and academic libraries, especially those with strong art collections.
