Although research is the engine of all innovation, the research building as a purely functional building has not been of any architectural interest for a long time. However, there is consensus now that structures for research and knowledge transfer can do more than just providing workplaces and experimental areas. They are spaces of communication and inspiration, of urban development and a reflection of our times. With this volume, the authors open the discussion on this type of building. They examine architecture for science in the context of urban structures, as a highly specialized building type, as well as in its dimension as a working and living environment, and with regard to creative considerations. The interdisciplinary approach is of decisive importance here, and thus not only architects, urban planners planners, but also scientists from various academic disciplines have their say.

About the Authors

Christine Nickl-Weller studied Architecture at the Technische Universit�t M�nchen. In 1989, co-founded the architectural office Nickl & Partner in Munich. Conceived and constructed buildings in the healthcare, research and teaching sectors, both in Germany and abroad, as well as development and master plans. In 2008, became CEO of the corporation. In 2019, became Chairwoman of the Supervisory Board. From 2004 to 2017, Professor of “Hospital Design and Healthcare Buildings” at the Technische Universit�t Berlin.

Hans Nickl studied Architecture at the Technische Universit�t M�nchen. In 1979, founded his own architectural office. In 1989, co-founded Nickl & Partner together with his wife Prof. Christine Nickl-Weller. In 1992, appointed Professor of Structural Design at Erfurt University of Applied Sciences. From 2004 to 2017, taught as a guest at the Technische Universit�t Berlin in the field of “Hospital Design and Healthcare Buildings”.
