"The array did not fail. It did not destroy us. It translated us."

Dr. Eshan Varma is sent to Axis Verge to audit a research crew whose reports have stopped agreeing with their own logs. The station's experiment was meant to resolve structure below the scale where referents hold. It succeeded. Something on the other side was willing to answer.

Investigator Lian Arora works a maglev crash where the safety systems triggered a full second before the impact that caused them.

Generations later, on a terraced hillside, Sera rings a small bell at dawn so that everyone will look at the same world at the same time. When they don't, the air goes thin at the edges.

The arc runs from the First Collapse through the Wars of Name and the Great Keeping to what came after. A future history of a species that acquired a sense it never asked for and spent a thousand years learning it could not be commanded, only consented to.

The Architecture of Unmaking is a science fiction story cycle: fifteen connected stories and an epilogue, arranged in five cycles that span the collapse and the civilizations that grew out of it. Each story stands on its own. Read in order, they form a single future history, and the epilogue is the key that unlocks what came before it. The print edition includes sixteen full-page illustrations, one opening each story.

This is not a straight-ahead plot, and it does not pretend to be. The prose is dense and the ideas are complex. Readers who want speculative fiction that asks something of them have called it a masterpiece. Readers who want easy entertainment should look elsewhere.

Our magic is not command. It is consent.
