Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1892 FIRST EDITION HARDCOVER. Blue cloth beveled boards and spine with gilt lettering and silver illustration. Front board has some water damage on the bottom half. Traces of water damage along some page edges and inner corners. Page 112 and 113 were stuck together in a small area and pulled apart, causing a small section of damage towards the bottom of the page. Pages are bright, clean and unmarked. White cloth boards with gilt lettering on front and spine, silver illustration on front; bw illustrated frontispiece with protective tissue guard; vii, 524 pp; illustrated in bw maps, portraits and photographic views. Divided in two sections. "The first part, "The Voyage of the Kite" is the narrative expedition sent in 1891 to convey Lieut. Peary to the northwestern shore of Greenland. The second "The Peary Relief Expedition" is a record of the second voyage of the same vessel in the present year, when she was sent to bring the party home again. Added is a transcript of the log-book of Captain Pike, the commander of the ship on both expeditions; a number of facts relating to Mr. Verhoeff, the only missing member of either party, with letters from his relatives giving the arguments in favor of their belief that he is still alive, and the correspondence between the young man and Lieut. Peary anterior to his joining the expedition" -preface excerpt. Good (heavy wear and soiling to boards, binding is tight, pages have light age toning but are otherwise clear.).
