A very good complete set for Argyll, published between 1971 and 1992. Neatly inside the cover of each are the small initials "JA" - this is the late John AShdown for many years Conservation Officer of Oxford City Council. The books also include the odd insert for the travels made in Argyll by him and his wife.Seven Quarto Vols in d/j's. Volume 1 - Kintyre, pp.xlvi + 233 + 102 b/w photographs and 195 text figs, some folding. Folded Map and Conversion Tables in reare pocket; Volume 2 Lorn, pp.xlviii + 325 +120 b/w plates and 248 line drawings; Volume 3 Mull, Tiree, Coll & Northern Argyll (excluding the early medieval and later monuments of Iona), pp.xlvi + 281 + 109 b/w plates and 263 text figs; Volume 4 - Iona, pp.xvi with text figs and full page illustrations. Scale drawings of Iona Abbey at the end.; Volume 5, Islay, Jura, Colonsay and Oronsay, pp.xxiv + 373 with many photographs, line drawings, fold out plans and coloured maps at end; Volume 6, Mid-Argyll and Cowal, Prehistoric and Early Historic Monuments, pp.xxviii + 592, illustrated throughout wity colour maps at end; and Volume 7 - Mid Argyll & Cowal, Medieval and Later Monuments, pp.xxviii + 592 and illustrated throughout with plans and photographs. D/j's are very slightly rubbed with the odd tiny split to their edges. In Volume 6 John Ashdown has used a highlighter pen on one entry. A note in the IOna Vol. says it came from the Library of Howard Colvin. Given the two men knew each other and both were in Oxford this is perfectly possible but there is no book plate or signature.
