Emerson (1701-1782) was a capable mathematician, and his texts, beginning with the Doctrine of Fluxions (1749), were widely used in the eighteenth century He was also rather an eccentric, and the studied oddity of his dress caused a widespread belief that he was a magician. Three parts in one, octavo. 4, 44, [2], 225, [1], iv, 115, [3] pp. Forty-two engraved folding plates. Each part with a separate half-title. Nineteenth-century half calf over decorative boards, gilt-decorated spine. Chip at head of spine neatly repaired with newer calf, embossed library stamp on title-page, rubberstamped numeral on verso of title-page, some offsetting to endpapers. A good, clean copy.
