Arithmetic Tests and Studies in the Psychology of Arithmetic

Arithmetic Tests And Studies In The Psychology Of Arithmetic by George S. Counts provides a detailed account of developing and applying an arithmetic test to diagnose and measure students' mastery of the fundamental operations and fractions. The monograph describes a spiral, diagnostic arithmetic test designed to reveal both general attainment and specific weaknesses in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions. It explains the 15 sets (A through O) arranged to progress in complexity, with interwoven operations to minimize fatigue and a time-allowance structure that converts the assessment into a speed test. Counts outlines data collection in Cleveland and Grand Rapids, the creation of standard scores, and a system of weights to aggregate performance into a single overall arithmetical attainment score. The work analyzes errors, distributions, and accuracy, and examines differences across age groups, promotion groups, and race groups. It also discusses limitations of the data, the need for experimental supplementation, and implications for instruction and further research. The study underscores the test’s educational value while acknowledging tentative conclusions and the necessity for additional evidence.
