Around the Corner and Up the Block (Paperback)

Paperback. The collection of autobiographical fiction is composed of 14 short stories based in experiences growing up in early 1960s Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Spanning the years 1960-1966, they describe many instances that took place in the author's life. They tell of a Catholic school upbringing that both shaped and unshaped his attitude toward life, along with family dynamics that, in their zany ways, helped show him the difference between good and bad. Told from the perspective of a twelve-year-old, and described in the neighborhood's idiom, themes centered around innocence, maturity, and the challenges associated with being on the threshold of puberty are traced through the years.
