1834 copy of The Art of Heraldry; explaining the origin and use of arms and armorial bearings; escutcheons, quarterings and charges, crowns, coronets, mitres, matchments, tombs, monuments, &c to which is added, The Office of a Herald; comprising an elaborate table of precendency of rank; the degrees of nobility in England; and a familiar account of the high powers, duties, and privileges of the great officers of state and of his Majesty's household. Relieved by appropriate anecdotes, and illustrated with woodcuts. Author unknown. For it's age, in reasonably good condition showing overall signs of wear. brown leather (?) boards with a black shield shaped title to the front. Sadly part of the spine cover missing - might be where the title was. Torn at the spine end. Corners are turned and a couple of exterior stains. Dulled gilt page edges. Previous owners label inside front end paper; W A Marsden University College Oxford 1897 and a gift inscription to preliminary page. Heavy foxing in places. An interesting little book.…
