About the The Art of 150 of theMostInspirational and Influential Speeches in History The speeches in this book changed history. Sometimes they didsos traight forwardly, for instance by setting in train a change ofmind among the audience, as Wilber force began to do over the slavetrade. But sometimes it was by changing the way posterity hasviewed a decision already taken, as Socrates did at his trial eventhough he was condemned to death. Every speech has been chosen on its merits. Such merits are oftwo kinds, however. A speech may be and usually is a highlyreadable essay in the art of immediate persuasion. But it issometimes more the trigger by which a world historical person agehas catapulted mankind into action afterwards. As such, it may havehad a more long-term historical than an immediate impact. For thatreason the accompanying remark explaining the context of everyspeech and giving an account of the speaker are as vital as thespeech itself. About the Charles Mosley Charles Mosley was born in London and educated at Eton and KingsCollege Cambridge. He has worked all his life in publishing, information research, journalism, and broadcasting. A tone time heegularly monitored speech making by overseas politicians for theForeign and Commonwealth Office. He has also covered speechesbyBritish politicians, and occasionally delivers speecheshimself. He is the author or editor of many books, including AmericanPresidential Families (with Hugh Brogan), Burkes Peerage andBaronetage (106th and 107th editions), Blood Royal, and DebrettsGuide to Entertaining. He contributed the biographies of Britainseighteenth- and nineteenth-century prime ministers to the BurkesPeerage and Gentry website. He lives with his second wife and two dogs in the Londonboroughof Westminster, where the crafting, polishing, and delivery ofspeeches is a centuries-old industry.
