Throughout his lengthy medical and research career, author Om P. Sharma, MD, has discovered that human beings are communal creatures who often tie their own contentment to the well-being of their neighbor.
From this perspective, it’s easy to understand why our connections through technology have become so vital to the way we feel about who we are and what we offer the world. Linking us to people all over the globe, technology has become the tool we use to determine how others perceive us and how we should judge ourselves—with most of our value being attached to the temporal world rather than the spiritual.
The Art and Science of Happiness in Body, Mind, and Soul examines the pursuit of happiness, including our history with it, philosophies regarding it, the biology that compels us to chase it, the religious and spiritual guidance that teaches us how to nurture it, and scientific interpretations of it.
In a society that often measures worth by material possessions, Dr. Sharma notes that many of us have lost sight of what truly brings fulfillment and joy: developing a sense of integrity and morality, spiritual connection, and compassion for ourselves and those around us.
Om P. Sharma, MD, was born and raised in India. After receiving his medical degree, Dr. Sharma earned his board certification in surgery and practiced at a prestigious medical institute in Northern India before moving to the United States in the early 1970s.
As a trauma surgeon, Dr. Sharma faced many life-and-death situations, as well as the moral, ethical, and ideological challenges, learning to pursue physician's duty not only to heal the injured bodies but also their weakened minds with empathy and compassion.
Dr. Sharma has published fort-two articles in peer-reviewed journals and delivered scientific lectures in many countries around the world. He was Trauma Director and Clinical Professor of Surgery: President and Chairman of Board of Surgical Society and The Hindu Temple of Toledo. After retiring, he decided to turn his mind to the human quest for happiness.
Dr. Sharma lives in Toledo, Ohio, with his wife Rajni. They have two sons and five grandchildren.
