Arte Mexicana

Arte Mexicana by Antonio del Rincon is a historical Spanish-language grammar of the Nahuatl language spoken in central Mexico. This edition presents Rincon's Arte Mexicana and includes an introduction, prologue, and licensure documents from 1595. The work outlines the structure of the language through five declensions, rules for forming plurals, the declension and use of pronouns, prepositions, and a comprehensive system of verb conjugations in the present, imperfect, and future, including passive and applicative forms. It also covers the derivation of nouns and verbs, the formation of compounding, pronunciation and accent rules, and a glossary of Mexicanisms. As a key primary source for the study of early Nahuatl grammar, Arte Mexicana reflects the colonial aim of documenting and standardizing the language for missionary work and education in New Spain.
