Artificial Intelligence in Dentistry

Artificial Intelligence in Dentistry: A Comprehensive Academic Review explores how AI technologies - including machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, and natural language processing - are transforming modern oral healthcare across all dental specialties. The book traces AI's evolution in dentistry from rigid 1980s expert systems through the deep learning revolution sparked by AlexNet in 2012, up to today's FDA-cleared commercial platforms. It demonstrates, with clinical evidence, that AI now matches or exceeds specialist-level accuracy in tasks like caries detection (AUC 0.91-0.97), periapical lesion identification (95% accuracy), and cephalometric landmark analysis (±0.9 mm error). Each major specialty gets dedicated coverage - radiology, periodontics, orthodontics, prosthodontics, oral surgery, and oncology - showing how AI is automating diagnosis, surgical planning, prosthetic design, and cancer screening. The book also evaluates real-world commercial platforms such as Pearl, Overjet, and DentalMonitoring currently in clinical use.
