Discover how artificial waterways powered growth, policy, and national progress, and what that means for today’s infrastructure choices.
This nonfiction study surveys the canal system and its modernization, from the Erie Canal to broader waterway policy. It connects historical development with current debates on how navigation, irrigation, and river management shape economies and communities. The work explains why public ownership and strategic investment were once seen as vital to national progress, and how later reforms tested those ideas. It uses historical context, policy discussion, and statistical appendices to illuminate the forces that built America’s inland waterways.
Readers gain a clear view of the rise and modernization of canal transportation, the balance between public good and private interests, and the enduring impact of waterways on commerce, towns, and regional growth. The text frames the debate with concrete examples and data, helping you understand how infrastructure decisions echo in today’s transportation networks.
- How canals fueled early economic growth and shaped state and national policy.
- Key arguments for and against public ownership of transportation facilities.
- Plans, costs, and modernization efforts that expanded canal capacity over time.
- Statistical tables and historical context that illustrate the waterways’ impact on commerce.
Ideal for readers of American infrastructure history, economic policy, and public works, this edition provides a grounded look at a pivotal era of development.

**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone.
