pp.viii, 339 pages, a near fine hardback, publisher's original brown cloth binding with bright gold gilt lettering to the spine and front cover, minimal evidence that the book is from a university library. Billed as the 'Sixth Thousand' of the 3rd ed. book is clean, tight & unmarked in bright clean unworn covers. The author (1809-1879) was a well known Victorian lawyer ( a 'Serjeant at Law'), magazine and law report publisher and, not least the founder of the Psychological Society of Great Britain (1875-1879), from which the Society for Psychic Research emerged (he seems to have been the one who originally coined the term 'psychic'] and author of at least four books on psychological topics. This was clearly one of his more 'bread and butter' works, but nonetheless thorough in its coverage of composition, literary styles, oratory and elocution. Horace Cox was the author's nephew.
