The Ascent Through Christ; a Study of the Doctrine of Redemption in the Light of the Theory of Evolution

The Ascent Through Christ; A Study Of The Doctrine Of Redemption In The Light Of The Theory Of Evolution by E. Griffith-Jones presents a late Victorian–early modern attempt to harmonize Christian faith with evolutionary thought. The work treats evolution not as a threat but as a framework shaping questions about sin, the Fall, the person and work of Christ, and human destiny. Central to the argument is Jesus as the ideal human, whose Resurrection and the Pentecostal work of the Spirit inaugurate a new phase of development in individuals, the Church, and society. The Life of the Spirit is described as operative in three spheres: inner character formation, the unity and gifts of the Church, and an expansive social influence beyond formal institutions. The author reframes justification by faith as a filial restoration through union with the risen Christ and envisions a future where mental, moral, and social progress are guided by Christian ethics. He engages Genesis as theology, defends miracles, and argues for a remnant- and sifting-based eschatology that remains pastorally plausible within an evolutionary worldview.
