About this title

Synopsis

Asia And Europe; Studies Presenting The Conclusions Formed By The Author In A Long Life Devoted To The Subject Of The Relations Between Asia And Europe by Meredith White Townsend is a scholarly collection that compiles Townsend’s lifelong inquiry into the interrelations between Asia and Europe. The work gathers essays and press notices originally published in late 19th-century periodicals, presenting an objective, comparative examination of how Asian civilizations have influenced and resisted European dominance. Townsend analyzes the persistent separateness of East and West, the limited, often illusory, reach of European influence on Asia, and the enduring strength of Asiatic civilizations. Topics range from the influence of Europe on Asia and the spread of Islam and Christianity in India, to the challenges of British rule in India, the rise of Japan, the status of the Ottoman Empire, and the broader fate of continents under colonial and imperial pressures. The volume blends geopolitical analysis, ethnography, and moral reflection, reflecting a historic imperial viewpoint and the author’s conviction that Asia and Europe remain distinct yet interlinked forces shaping world history.
