The Asian water monitor is one of the largest and most widely distributed species within the genus Varanus, which comprises over 70 recognized monitor lizard species. Belonging to the family Varanidae and the order Squamata, V. salvator is closely related to the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis), sharing ancestral traits with other large carnivorous reptiles.

The Asian water monitor is among the largest lizard species, with adult males reaching lengths of 1.5 to 2.7 meters and weighing up to 25 kg, although most specimens average between 1.5 and 2 meters. Their body is laterally compressed, aiding in aquatic locomotion. Scalation is comprised of small, smooth, and non-overlapping scales that create a sleek, hydrodynamic surface. The ventral scales are broader and more rectangular, while dorsal scales may contain minute keels. The tail is laterally flattened and possesses a median dorsal crest that assists in swimming. Coloration varies geographically, from dark grey to olive brown, usually marked with pale yellow or cream ocelli or bands. Juveniles typically display more prominent patterning, which fades with age. Regional morphs such as melanistic or high-yellow variants have emerged both naturally and through selective captive breeding.
