Item description from seller

~Quarter brown cloth, pale blue paper to boards. Black lettering to spine, printed paper label to front board. With original glassene dustwrapper, edgeworn and chipped and darkened to spine. 8vo (13.3 x 19.5cm). Printed on laid paper. A very little foxing to endpapers only. Small bookplate of Ruth Pitter (1897-1992, prominent British poet) to inside front board. Dedicatory inscription to Ruth Pitter in pen to front free endpaper, dated 1951, from Edward Neville da Costa Andrade. With loose letter, handwritten to Pitter from Andrade on Davy Faraday Research Laboratory paper, also dated 1951. Andrade (1887-1971) was a physicist, writer, and poet, responsible for important work on the wavelengths of gamma rays with Ernest Rutherford. In his cordial letter, he gives a glowing introduction to C. S. Sherrington, 'one of the greatest minds of our times', and notes that 'I consider him to be a fine - though, of course, quite unknown poet'. Sherrington (1857-1952) was indeed a brilliant physician, specialising in the study of the nervous system: he had shared the Nobel prize in medicine with E. D. Adrian in 1932. By 1951 Sherrington was 93, and very eminent indeed. Andrade proudly records that he received a letter for Sherrington, which he encloses for Pitter to read, asking her to return it - as it is not present, she evidently did send it back. A well-preserved volume by a Nobel prize-winning physician, with provenance linking the worlds of mid-20th-century British poetry and science. ~Robust packaging. All UK orders trackable, others on request. Used books are exempt from USA tariffs. 2nd edn. Hardback. Size: viii, 88pp.…
