The photograph shows two American servicemen inspecting the brick-built crematorium ovens in which the bodies of prisoners were burned. Dachau, established in 1933 as the first permanent concentration camp created by the Nazi regime, was liberated by American forces on 29 April 1945, when approximately 32,000 prisoners were found within the camp. Photographs of its crematorium and other physical evidence became an important part of the Allied visual documentation of Nazi persecution and mass death. The original Associated Press caption remains affixed to the reverse and identifies the photograph as part of the agency?s fortieth-anniversary retrospective. This physical print dates from 1985 rather than 1945, but remains an authentic Associated Press newspaper working photograph with clear commemorative and documentary context. From the photographic archive of the Shields Gazette, retaining its archive stamp verso. Photograph size 15.1 × 20.3 cm. Very good condition with minor edge wear and light creasing consistent with newspaper archive use.
