Assumptions and Other Stories

This collection of stories ranges in tone from comic to philosophic. Influenced by writers such as Flannery O’Connor, James Joyce, and Edgar Allan Poe, Mr. Mulhern renders slices of Boston and South Florida life with comedy, horror, moments of grace, and an assortment of quirky characters.

James Mulhern has published fiction in several literary journals. He has been recognized with several accolades for his writing. Three of his short stories were selected for anthologies of best short fiction. In September of 2013, he was chosen as a finalist for the Tuscany Prize in Catholic Fiction. In 2015, Mr. Mulhern was awarded a full-paid writing fellowship to study at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. That same year, his story, "A Nun's Arse," was longlisted for Ireland's Fish Short Story Prize. Short stories adapted from his novel, Molly Bonamici, have been accepted for publication in eleven literary journals. Three of those stories received awards. Both his novel, Molly Bonamici, and collection of short stories, Assumptions and Other Stories, earned five-star reviews from Readers' Favorite and were favorably critiqued by Kirkus Reviews. He is currently writing, Aiden's Secret, a paranormal mystery; the opening chapter was accepted for publication by seven literary magazines.
