This book is the first volume of two planned volumes that were to be divided into five books and which contained much detail of the science of astronomy. This volume contains Book I (subdivided into 20 chapters) and Book II (subdivided into 22 chapters) of the planned five books. The remaining books are contained in Volume II that was not published until 1784. Well-bound in a modern leather binding with five raised bands on the spine. The book is exceptionally clean and in excellent condition.
A valuable documentation of the state of the art of astronomy to the middle of the eighteenth century. Numerous tables are included in the text and there is also an engraved figure of a globe surrounded by the sphere of the heavens opposite to the title page.
Roger Long (1680-1770) held the degree of Doctor of Divinity and was a Fellow of the Royal Society. At the time of writing this work, he was the Master of Pembroke Hall in the University of Cambridge.
