Furthermore, considerable trouble and wasted effort can arise in the foundry when defects are not properly diagnosed. This Atlas has therefore been prepared with the view of assisting both ferrous and non-ferrous foundrymen on the correct recognition and classification of defects in castings. It is not intended as a text book on how to make good castings, although it is hoped that it may be of some help in this direction. The Technical Council would like to take this opportunity of recording its appreciation of the assistance afforded by those foundries who have submitted examples and photographs. Special thanks are also due to the co-operation received from The British Steel Founders' Association in connection with the preparation of the section on defects in steel castings, to Professor Ing. K. Gierdziejewski, Krakow University, Poland, for his kindness in submitting certain of the illustrations and to Mr. J. Bolton and Mr. G. Lambert for their valuable assistance on the editorial side.
