Written at a level accessible to high-school students, this atlas provides a comprehensive survey of the development of Earth and its life-forms from about four billion years ago to the present. The atlas is divided into six chapters that cover the origin and nature of Earth and the beginnings of life and the early Paleozoic, late Paleozoic, Mesozoic, Tertiary, and Quaternary ages. These chapters are subdivided according to geological era. For example, part 5, "The Tertiary," is divided into "The Paleogene" and "The Neogene." Each consists of 20 or more pages of general discussion, followed by one or two two-page features. "The Paleogene" has features on "The Evolution of Mammals" and "The Evolution of Carnivores." Geological and biological developments of each era are presented by means of well-written text, maps, time lines, illustrations, and photographs. Sidebars describe important events and concepts.

The 400 full-color illustrations, photographs, and maps in this atlas are outstanding and should stimulate the interest of the students. A 12-page glossary provides succinct definitions of important terms. A useful feature is the inclusion of the index and glossary for the whole set in each volume.

This set pulls together key concepts on the development of Earth and presents them in a very attractive, interesting manner. It is recommended for high-school and public libraries. RBB
