8vo. 21cm, first English edition, being 27 engraved topographical maps (8 double-page), 2 geological engraved plates, original quarter leather marbled boards, spine chipped & lacking title, boards detached, board & spine heavily rubbed & worn, institutional library bookplate, several small faint blind stamps, the plates and maps are in are very good condition, Rare (tr). ~ The Atlas to accompany Alexander de Laborde's 5 volume "View of Spain", 1809. (The English translation of "Itineraire descriptif de l'Espagne", 1808). French antiquary, politician & writer, Alexandre de Laborde (1773-1842) served as administrator in both the Napoleonic and post Napoleonic periods. The maps are topographic and very detailed. In the early 1800's, Laborde had served in the French embassy in Spain. Double-page maps include: the mountains of Spain; the Kingdom of Spain; the environs of Madrid; Andalusia; roads of part of Andalusia; roads of part of Entremadura; roads of Galicia; map of the Balearic Isles and part of the Kingdom of Valencia. Single sheet maps include: Catalonia; Kingdom of Argon; Gibraltar; and 17 road maps. This atlas unexpectedly proved to be very useful in Napoleon's invasion of Spain in 1808!
