Audi Alteram Partem, Letters of a Representative to His Constituents

Audi Alteram Partem, Letters Of A Representative To His Constituents by Thomas Perronet Thompson is a collection of Thompson's parliamentary letters written between June 1857 and August 1858. The work presents a sustained liberal critique of mid-19th-century British politics and empire, addressing issues from the admission of Jews to Parliament and the equitable taxation of the working classes, to the governance of India, China, and Ireland. Thompson argues for parliamentary reform, including the ballot, expanded education, and a fairer distribution of public burdens. He condemns imperial misadventures, militarism, and the centralization of power in the Crown’s ministers, urging accountability, independent inquiry, and the protection of civil liberties. The letters reveal a radical, reformist perspective aimed at curbing corruption, promoting justice, and challenging imperial policies, while advocating for humane, rational politics grounded in the interests of the industrious classes and oppressed peoples.
