Dr. Augustus Neander's Scriptural Expositions of the Epistle of Paul to the Philippians, and the General Epistle of James

Dr. Augustus Neander's Scriptural Expositions Of The Epistle Of Paul To The Philippians, And The General Epistle Of James is a translated pair of Neander's practical commentaries on two New Testament letters. Although framed as scholarly study, the work aims to edify ordinary Christians by presenting the living spiritual meaning of Paul’s Epistle to the Philippians and James’s General Epistle, rather than a mere critical apparatus. The Introduction discusses Neander’s character and method, highlighting his pastoral warmth, robust biblical theology, and emphasis on the unity of divine truth manifested across Scripture. The Philippians portion expounds Paul’s life and theology as the basis for perseverance, self-denial, and union with Christ, examining themes such as the tension between earthly and heavenly concerns, the role of suffering and martyrdom, and the ongoing struggle to imitate Christ. The James portion treats the Epistle’s practical exhortations—humility, love, the dangers of worldly favoritism, the necessity of living faith, and the harmony of faith and works—within Neander’s overarching vision of Christian life shaped by Christ. The translation by Mrs. H. C. Conant renders Neander’s German prose into readable English for a broad audience.
