Australia, Its Rise, Progress, and Present Condition (Classic Reprint)

A concise, wide‑range portrait of Australia’s growth, from early discovery to self‑governing progress.

This edition brings together revised Britannica articles on Australasia and Australia, updated with recent statistics and a collective view of the vast, rapidly changing region. It traces how colonies like Victoria, South Australia, and New Zealand rose through political, commercial, and social change, while offering context on exploration, settlement, and the challenges of a young empire.

Two short paragraphs frame the scope and value: it surveys the geography, people, and institutions that shape the modern Australian world, balancing descriptive history with current developments. The text also documents lively events and debates, from frontier politics to migration and native relations, giving readers a clear sense of the region’s complexity and pace.

• Overview of the major colonies and their growth, politics, and trade
• Accounts of exploration, travel narratives, and the push to map the continent
• Discussion of social issues, including migration, native relations, and community tensions
