Here is the "Authorised Guide to the Tower of London", being the May 1936 Revised Edition, as published by His Majesty's Stationery Office. Bound in stapled wraps, printed black on gray-green, the pamphlet was printed by Eyre and Spottiswoode Ltd., and contains ground plans of the Tower complex, as well as a halftone photograph of the Tower, and a text describing the various parts of the Tower complex. It's a handsome touchstone from a prewar year, with period advertising that serves to prove that, even with war looming on the near historic horizon, life in London went on as usual. The companies and/or products advertised in this edition of the Guide are : ** Mazawattee Tea **Oetzmann Furnishing ** Golden Shred Marmalade ** Eagle Steamers ** Ross System of Height Improvement "Inches put you miles ahead" ** Where to Stay in London : The Berkshire, Room and Breakfast ; Cleve Hall Hotel ; Park view Hotel ** New Mansion Hotels "Hot and cold running water in every bedroom, night and day" ** Benbow's Dog Mixture ** Horrockses Sheets, Pillow Cases, and White Goods ** Puritan Leather Sole Shoes ** Symbolic Pneumonia Preventive and Cure (entire inside of back cover) ** Restall's Mid-Week Trips (Entire back cover exterior) As with so much old ephemera, such advertisements as these contribute to our knowledge about commercial and business history of past times.
